a contemplative service of communion

OVERSHADOWED

About the Piece

Overshadowed is an eight-movement work for small ensemble inspired by the story of Mary’s encounter with Gabriel (the Annunciation, Luke 1:26-38).  The piece is structured as a communion liturgy for use in the church. Some of the movements are purely instrumental, while others invite congregational singing. Readings, written meditations, prayers, and times of silence are interspersed throughout the service to guide the experience.

Hear the Music

During the service, the congregation will be led in singing simple melodies as a communal expression of prayer. Listen to arrangements of these melodies below:

Hear the congregational benediction:

What is a contemplative service? Services in the contemplative tradition facilitate an encounter with God through readings, prayers, singing, and periods of intentional silence.  These contemplative practices help us to slow down, quiet our thoughts, release anxiety, and bring our awareness to the soul and God’s presence within. Contemplative practices encourage us to set aside the need for constant activity in order to acknowledge God’s goodness through rest and receptivity.
